Micro and Nanostructured Materials

Referent: Bottani Carlo Enrico

The Micro- and Nanostructured Materials Laboratory is located at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. The lab research activity is devoted to the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured films and surfaces, clusters and nanostructures. At present the research activities focus on nanostructured film growth and morphological and structural characterization (also in situ).

Vibrational, structural and nanomechanical properties are investigated by means of Raman and Brillouin inelastic light scattering. Surface morphology, nanotribologic and surface electronic properties are investigated with scanning probe microscopy AFM/STM and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Current research projects focus on the study of materials for technological applications in different fields such as energy storage and production (photovoltaics and nuclear fusion) catalysis, gas sensing, , biological and biomedical applications.

The Lab was established in the Nuclear Engineering Department in 1992 with Raman and Brillouin laser spectroscopies related to the study of vibrational, structural and elastic properties of surfaces, interfaces, thin films, heterostructures and nanostructured systems. Since 2003 the Micro and Nanostructured Materials Lab and 4 other laboratories at Politecnico di Milano constitute the NanoEngineered MAterials and Surfaces - NEMAS Center entitled by the Italian Ministery of University and Research - MIUR as a center of excellence in nanoscience and nanotechnology. From 2009 the Lab is part of the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano.
